PITTSBURG, Kan. — A holiday tradition that began several years ago as a musical gift to the Pittsburg area community continues this year, with a unique twist: The world premier of a new piece of music commissioned especially for the event.
The Vespers Concert, a joint concert between the Pittsburg High School band, orchestra, and choir programs, will be at 7 p.m. on Dec. 13 at Memorial Auditorium, 503 N. Pine.
Instrumental direction is by Cooper Neil and vocal direction is by Susan Laushman, who this year has added the voices of the Pittsburg Multi-Generational Chorus to the line-up.
The program will feature two movements from a work commissioned through the Community Foundation of Southeast Kansas.
Lyrics are from poems written by award-winning poet PHS English teacher Melissa Fite-Johnson, and the score was composed by Pittsburg State University music faculty member John C. Ross. The full work will be premiered at next year’s Vespers.
Neil said the concert will include contemporary works that should evoke different feelings associated with the winter season.
Also new this year is a ticketing system for those planning to attend. Tickets will be required for those sitting on the main floor of the auditorium, but they are free. Tickets must be picked up at Memorial Auditorium in advance during business hours. Tickets are available now for parents and family members of PHS music students. They will go on sale to the general public on December 6th. For more information, contact Memorial Auditorium at 620-231-7827 Monday-Friday 8am-5pm.
