Multiple Teams · PHS Wrestlers Receive Huge Honors in Summer Tourneys

The PHS wrestling competed in the 2015 summer with a lot of positives. The team competed in the Jazz Town duals in New Orleans, LA for a second year. The dual tournament has 28 teams from all over the United States and the Dragons took 8th place. The Dragons competed at a high level with the coaches and fans very proud of their effort.

“I also want to thank all the parents and the community for all their efforts to make this event happen for these young men,” Coach Scott Rieck said. “It takes a lot of working on the part of the wrestlers and parents to prepare for this big event, but well worth it.”

Competitors included Reece Watson, A.J. Lair, David Green, Hayden Still, Wes Jameson, Keyth Waltrip, Joseph Tallie, Christian Hyde, Dylan Prince, Kayne Hutchison, and Deveron Duncan. Skylur Vonwinklepleck was unable to compete due to injury.

In addition to the Jazz Town Duals, Dylan Prince and Kayne Hutchison had a great performance at the freestyle and Greco National Tournament in Fargo, North Dakota. Prince and Hutchison wrestled for five grueling days.

These are the Olympic styles of wrestling. It’s the largest wrestling tournament in the United States.

Prince wrestled 195 for team Kansas and placed 4th in Greco and 5th in freestyle.

Hutchison wrestled 220 for team Kansas placing 2nd in Greco and 3rd in freestyle.

“These two young men are double All-Americans, adding to the growing list of past Pittsburg High School All-Americans,” Rieck said. “Kayne is our first national finalist. These guys have diligently trained for the last nine months for these honors. They have two more years to reach their dreams of a national title.”

In addition to those accomplishments, the pair placed third this past spring in the Folk Style National Tournament in Cedar Falls, Iowa.  Hutchison placed 5th in Greco and 6th in freestyle at the Cadet World team trails in Akron, Ohio in May. It’s been a lot of wrestling for these two young men, but full of gratification for all their hard work.

Pittsburg’s Freestyle and Greco All-American honors; Derek Koehn 1x, Tyler Koehn 5x, Jordan Brown 2x, Dylan Prince 3x, Kayne Hutchison 2x.

“Not many communities in this state can boast about having this many All-Americans and national honors in the last eight years,” he said.  “I always look forward to seeing who will be the next Pittsburg kid to be added to this list.”

Hutchison is ranked number one at 220 pounds  and Prince is ranked number two at 195 pounds in the Cadet Olympian rankings.
